Skiing in Clanwilliam Dam

If you’ve ever spent a summer in the Olifants River Valley, you know that when the heat hits, there is only one place to be. Tucked at the base of the Cederberg mountains, the Clanwilliam Dam isn’t just a scenic backdrop—it’s the heartbeat of our town and a second home for anyone who loves being on the water.

It has earned a reputation as a favorite spot in the Western Cape for waterskiing, and for good reason. With 18km of water to explore, there is plenty of space to find that perfect, glassy stretch for a morning ski or a late-afternoon wakeboard session.

A Playground for All Watersports

While the skiing is world-class, the dam is a wide-open playground for every kind of water enthusiast. On any given day, you’ll see the water buzzing with activity:

  • Wakeboarding & Kneeboarding: Perfect for catching air and making the most of the wake.

  • Tubing: A family favorite for anyone looking for a high-speed thrill.

  • Jet Skiing: For those who love fast-paced agility on the open water.

  • Kayaking & Canoeing: The best way to explore the quiet inlets and get a closer look at the rugged Cederberg rock formations.

  • Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP): Incredible for a calm, early morning workout before the breeze picks up.

  • Sailing & Windsurfing: Fantastic when the afternoon valley winds start to blow.

Surviving the “Clanwilliam Oven”

We don’t sugarcoat the weather here! While you might see 35°C on a forecast, locals know that mid-summer temperatures regularly soar well past 40°C. It’s the kind of heat that makes a cooler box of ice and a spray of dam water feel like the greatest luxury on earth. If you’re out on the boat, remember that the sun reflects off the water—pack twice as much sunblock as you think you’ll need!

More Than Just a Ski Trip

If you’re visiting during August or September, you’ll see the landscape undergo a complete transformation.

  • The Flowers: The Ramskop Nature Garden, located overlooking the dam, becomes a sea of indigenous Namaqualand wildflowers. It is a short, easy walk and a must-see for anyone who appreciates the “floral carpets” our region is famous for.

  • The Fishing: In October, the focus shifts slightly as the local Angling Club hosts the Bass Classic, one of the most anticipated events on the calendar for local and visiting fishermen.

Making Yourself at Home

After a full day out on the water, there’s nothing better than retreating to the comfort of our guesthouse. Being based right here in town, you’re just a short trip from the dam but away from the busy crowds of the water’s edge. It’s the perfect place to kick back, fire up the braai, and enjoy the “platteland” hospitality that keeps families returning year after year.
